Types Of Counseling
Whether you are looking to repair your relationship with yourself, your spouse, anxiety, your trauma, food, technology, or someone or something else, we offer a range of options to meet your individual and specific needs!
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling can be helpful for anyone that is interested in learning about and understanding themselves more, or for those that are recognizing how their past may be influencing their current relationships or well-being and for those interested in improving some aspect of their own life. Individual work can be a wonderful option for those that are struggling in relationships yet have a partner that is not ready or open to counseling.
We assist individuals with a range of concerns but some of our specialty areas include:
Co-dependency/Boundaries
Anxiety
Trauma
Parenting Struggles
Life transitions
Relationship conflict or distance
Family of origin exploration
Individual counseling can be adjusted to fit your preferences and needs, whether you’re just looking for a safe space to process your own thoughts and feelings or if you are eager to learn from a more psychoeducational process.
Couples Counseling
Whether you’re a couple looking to prepare for marriage or a couple that has been together for decades, relationships are complex and require work. I work with pre-marriage couples to explore the journey before them, couples that are struggling to communicate well, new parents, and couples navigating difficult seasons of all kinds including changes in season of life, infidelity, addiction, trauma, and more. Doing life with another person can be a beautiful thing and can also present some difficult obstacles to navigate. In couples counseling I view the couple as my client and work with both partners to meet the goals that they have as a unit.
co-therapy
Co-therapy is a unique type of therapy in which individual members of a couple or family work with their own individual therapist on their contributions, histories, traumas, and struggles while also engage in therapy with their partner or family members and their therapists at intervals throughout therapy to address the areas where these individual struggles influence the relationship dynamics. Benefits of co-therapy include individual space, therapeutic trust, and self-focus to work on the individual while also working with multiple professionals that are all on the same page and working toward the same goals for your family or marriage relationship. This is proven to be a beneficial way to address all aspects of need while avoiding having multiple therapists that may operate differently and unable to effectively collaborate to get the results clients need. City On A Hill Counseling collaborates with other therapists in order to offer this beneficial opportunity to our clients.
Family Counseling
Being a self is not an easy thing to do. Being a self in a system with others makes things a little more complex and difficult at times. I love working with families to explore patterns to understand what is and is not working well, as well as ways to communicate more effectively and work toward healing. I have extensive training in family systems and work with clients to explore family dynamics and patterns in order to understand where they learned to do things a certain way and open doors on how to do things differently.
Because children and adolescents are still developing and are not yet able to exercise as differentiated selves, we are happy to do family counseling with adults ages 16 and up. If you are struggling with younger members of the family, we have other options that may be a good fit for what you’re needing and prove to be more effective than family counseling with children or teens.
BRAINSPOTTING
Brainspotting is a type of therapy that offers a deep neurological healing that is different from traditional talk therapy. Through attunement and somatic observation, brainspotting is a powerful modality that allows clients to directly connect to and process trauma from where it is stored in the brain.
Brainspotting can be utilized to treat a variety of issues, including but not limited to:
Physical and emotional trauma
Recovery from injury and accident trauma
Medical trauma
Sports Performance and Creativity Enhancement
Chronic pain conditions
Addictions (especially cravings)
ADD, ADHD, OCD
Phobias
Trauma resulting from war and natural disasters
Anxiety and panic
EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is used to treat past trauma and PTSD. Different from average talk therapy, EMDR uses specific scripts and processes in conjunction with eye movements or other bi-lateral stimulation to reprocess memories in a way that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of previous disturbing life experiences. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can heal from psychological trauma just as the body recovers from physical trauma. EMDR can be done both in person and virtually.
Christian Counseling
As a Christian and ministry leader myself, I enjoy integrating faith into the counseling process for those that request it and find it helpful. Your beliefs and values are an important and significant part of who you are and can be a great resourced for making positive change.
